Eligibility Criteria for MBBS Admission in India
To qualify for a seat in any recognized medical college in India, candidates must strictly satisfy the eligibility frameworks defined by the NMC:
- Age Requirement: The candidate must be at least 17 years of age by December 31st of the admission year.
- Academic Qualification: Must have passed 10+2 (Higher Secondary) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology (PCB), and English as core subjects.
- Minimum Marks Requirement:
- General Category (UR / EWS): Minimum 50% aggregate marks in PCB.
- Reserved Categories (SC / ST / OBC): Minimum 40% aggregate marks in PCB.
- Mandatory Entrance: A valid qualifying percentile in the NEET UG exam.
MBBS Admission Counselling Seats Participation:
1. 15% All India Quota (AIQ) Counselling
Conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), this handles:
- 15% of MBBS seats in all State Government Medical Colleges.
- 100% of seats in Central Universities (AMU, BHU, DU) and AIIMS/JIPMER institutes.
- 100% of seats in Deemed Universities nationwide.
2. 85% State Quota Counselling
Conducted by the respective state’s Department of Medical Education (DME) (e.g., KEA in Karnataka, CET Cell in Maharashtra). This manages:
- 85% of seats in Government Medical Colleges within that specific state.
- 100% of institutional and management quota seats in State Private Medical Colleges.
Pro Tip for Aspirants: Open states like Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala allow students from other states to apply for their private college management quota seats, making them prime targets for students with moderate NEET scores.
MBBS Fee Structure in India (2026 Estimates)
The cost of pursuing an MBBS degree varies dramatically based on the type of seat allotment:
- Government Medical Colleges: Fees are highly subsidized, ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹150,000 per annum.
- Private Medical Colleges: Average fees range between ₹800,000 and ₹2,500,000 per annum depending on the state policies and rankings.
- Deemed Universities: Fees range between ₹18,000,000 to ₹30,000,000 per annum, typically accompanied by excellent clinical infrastructure.
