Hyderabad has one of the most underrated medical education ecosystems in the country. Senior doctors and admission consultants keep repeating it — and NEET toppers who picked Telangana tend to agree.
The state runs 66+ medical colleges, offers over 9,540 MBBS seats, and provides transparent state counseling through KNRUHS. Crucially, it doesn’t bind graduates to a mandatory rural service contract after MBBS. That saves students years of career flexibility.
If you’re a NEET 2026 candidate or a parent weighing MBBS admission in Telangana this cycle, this guide walks you through what matters—seat structure, eligibility, fees, top colleges, and the counseling process.
MBBS, which stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, is a popular undergraduate degree course in medicine. It is a five-and-a-half-year course that includes four and a half years of academic training and one year of internship.
Start with the numbers. MBBS in Telangana is offered through 37 government medical colleges and 29 private institutions, spread across Hyderabad, Warangal, Nizamabad, Khammam, and other cities. Government college seats alone number around 4,390, while private colleges contribute close to 4,950 seats — giving candidates a genuine spread of options across budgets and ranks.
Hyderabad itself is a magnet. The city’s connectivity, teaching hospital density, and reputation for quality infrastructure make MBBS colleges in Hyderabad the first preference for many candidates—both from within Telangana and from states like Maharashtra, Bihar, UP, and the North-East.
There’s also the student-friendly policy environment. Unlike many states, Telangana imposes no compulsory rural service bond after MBBS. Students who graduate through KNRUHS counseling can immediately pursue NEET-PG preparation, clinical practice, or international licensing exams—without a mandatory one-to-two-year service detour.
Competitive NEET cut-offs, affordable government fees, and a structured three-tier private college fee system round out why the state consistently ranks among the best medical colleges in Telangana.
Telangana is home to some of the best medical colleges in India, which offer MBBS programs. The admission process for MBBS in Telangana is highly competitive, and students must meet certain eligibility criteria to apply. Eligibility for MBBS admission in Telangana is layered. Missing one requirement can cost you an entire counseling round, so read the instructions carefully.
Academic qualification starts with Class 12 in the science stream. You need physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects. General category candidates must secure a minimum of 50% aggregate in PCB, while SC, ST, and OBC candidates qualify at 40%. PwD candidates in the General category need 45%.
NEET UG 2026 qualification is mandatory. No Telangana medical college — government or private — admits students outside the NEET pathway. You must clear at least the 50th percentile (general) or 40th percentile (reserved categories). The minimum age is 17 years as of December 31, 2026.
Now the part that trips up outstation candidates is domicile rules. For the 85% state quota seats in government colleges, KNRUHS applies specific local status criteria. You qualify as a local candidate if you studied in Telangana for 4 consecutive years, including Class 12; resided in Telangana for 4 years before your qualifying exam; studied in Telangana for 7 consecutive academic years prior to Class 12; or if your parents are Telangana domiciled or work under the state government.
If you don’t meet local status, you’re not out of the picture. You can still compete for 15% All India Quota seats through MCC counseling, management quota seats in private colleges, and the 15% of Category B seats open to non-locals. Non-Telangana candidates can also apply under NRI quota (Category C) seats in private colleges.
To get admission to an MBBS seat in Telangana, students must qualify for the NEET UG exam.

MBBS admission in Telangana runs through two parallel tracks—the All India Quota for 15% government seats via MCC at mcc.nic.in and the Telangana state counseling for the remaining 85% government seats plus 100% of private college seats through KNRUHS at knruhs.telangana.gov.in.
The timeline looks like this. NEET UG 2026 is expected on May 3, 2026. Results typically follow in early June. KNRUHS registration opens shortly after — usually late June or early July. Document verification, merit list publication, and choice filling run through July and August. Counselling rounds extend into September.
The process is entirely online. You register on the KNRUHS portal, pay the counselling fee, upload documents (NEET scorecard, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, domicile certificate if applicable, category certificate, and Aadhaar), fill in college preferences very carefully, and lock your choices. Seat allotment is declared round-wise based on NEET rank and fill preferences.
Once a seat is allotted, you report to the college within the stipulated window with original documents and the first-year fee. Missing the reporting deadline cancels your seat automatically — no exceptions.
